One more try

I installed WordPress for iPhone when I first got the phone, but, apart from comment moderation, I haven’t used the app for blogging as such. Which is as shame, as the plans were grand. As always.
But maybe my long commute will motivate me to use it more often. Let’s see whether I perservere or go back to reading Metro.
(Oh, and I can upload pics too? Marvellous! Here’s one from the weekend by the river).
Too soon…

This is a picture of my former colleague, Pawel Krotoski, who died last night following a stroke.
We both worked in the same BBC World Service newsroom, we both recorded shows together. We were both made redundant at the same time. He went off to explore the world, I was worrying about what to do next.
He couldn’t care less. I don’t know that many people who’ve experienced that much in such a short space of time. He went to live in Mexico and Thailand among other places. From Thailand he sent a short Skype message to another mutual colleague, Greg, who took the above picture. In it he said: “I’m living on a small island, not moving much. There are hammocks and beaches. Keep well, don’t let the cunts get you, they always know how to spoil your mood, you know my friend…”
That’s how I want to remember him: careless, carefree, with a cheeky smile and a fuck-you-all attitude.
He was only 36.
Spammers and my morality
Posted by Michal in Uncategorized on 25/03/2009
We all know the usual Vi@gra, Ciali$ etc spam subject lines. We automatically delete them. We’re sophisticated enough – well, some of us – to distinguish between a genuine bank email and a promise of a windfall from a forgotten relative we never really knew existed in Nigeria.
We are also used to random ‘free sexy pix, click here’ messages we get via various instant messengers.
So it was probably only a matter of time before spammers realised they needed to try a bit harder to grab our attention and make us click on a link of a dubious origin.
I have just received a spam message which quite simply appealed to my morality and suggested that my actions regarding this message would be a clear indication of my personality. Or to be more precise, of how rude I am. A morality lesson from a spammer? Must be a first.
“This is spam. But if you don’t want to be among the 95% of rude and ignorant users, help us and click on this link,” it read.
Very honest from the start. And then this appeal to your consciousness – ‘help us’! Was tempted to click, of course. Not out of guilt, just to see what exactly they were trying to install on my machine or what it was they were trying to flog.
I didn’t. Followed my usual pattern of behaviour in such circumstances. But how many people did fall for that?
Still, almost liked them.
